EU to invest $1.4 billion in AI, cybersecurity and digital skills

4 April 2025

The European Commission has announced a €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) investment in AI, cybersecurity, and digital skills as part of the Digital Europe Programme for 2025 to 2027. Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission's digital chief, emphasised that securing Europe's technological sovereignty necessitates investing in advanced technologies and enhancing citizens' digital competencies. Reuters

This initiative aligns with Europe's broader strategy to compete with the U.S. and China in the AI sector. The Commission plans to raise €20 billion to construct four AI 'gigafactories'—large public-access data centres aimed at fostering the development of advanced AI models that comply with Europe's stringent AI safety and data protection regulations. However, this plan faces challenges, including securing necessary chips, identifying suitable locations, and ensuring adequate electricity supply.

These investments reflect the European Union's commitment to strengthening its position in the global technology landscape by fostering innovation, enhancing cybersecurity measures, and equipping its workforce with essential digital skills.
